A Review of Dune: Part 2

A few weeks ago, I watched “Dune: Part 2” in theatres, and I was completely blown away. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, “Dune: Part 2” continues the epic saga of Paul Atreides as he rises amidst the treacherous and ever-changing sands of Arrakis. Following the success of its predecessor, “Dune,” the film surpasses the high expectations set by the first movie and is a brilliant adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel.

Set in the vast deserts that are as dangerous as they are beautiful, “Dune: Part 2” follows Paul’s journey after the destruction of House Atreides by the Harkonnen.

Timothée Chalamet returns as Paul Atreides, and he excels in his role, meticulously transforming from a naive young noble to the Fremen’s supreme Messiah, Muad'Dib. Zendaya's Chani gets more screen time, as she and Paul fall in love, and her character acts as a major influence in helping Paul adapt to Fremen’s culture and ways.

Villeneuve’s direction is meticulous, and each frame is crafted to showcase the harsh, raw beauty of Arrakis. The cinematography has received widespread acclaim - the sweeping landscapes, and intricate sets within the desert, built an immersive experience that is most impactful in theatres. Hans Zimmer’s score echoes his work on “Interstellar,” providing a haunting, powerful accompaniment that perfectly complements the visuals.

The narrative, spanning 2 hours and 45 minutes, is densely packed, yet flows smoothly, thanks to a well-constructed screenplay. The film’s pacing balances moments of quiet with intense action sequences. What I was most impressed with was how Paul’s internal monologues and thoughts were seamlessly integrated into the rest of the movie.

Some critics have commented that they find the film’s pace occasionally slow, as the book is full of political world-building and goes in depth about these political intricacies between the houses. However, I believe that these moments are essential for building the emotional and thematic layers of the story and that they are quite interesting rather than cumbersome.

Having read the series, my anticipation for the next film, which will adapt the second book of the series, “Dune Messiah,” is high. I cannot wait for Paul Atreides to return and for another incredible installment within the “Dune” universe.
